Hiriketiya to Galle Taxi & Galle Fort Transfer

Galle is the jewel of the south — a walled, UNESCO-listed Dutch fort full of boutiques, cafés, and colonial history, an easy and rewarding day trip from Hiriketiya.

Around 65 kilometres away, Galle is about an hour and twenty minutes from Hiriketiya along the coast. At its heart is Galle Fort, a remarkably preserved 16th-century fortress built by the Portuguese and expanded by the Dutch. Inside the ramparts you will find cobbled lanes lined with galleries, jewellers, and cafés, the landmark lighthouse, historic churches, and sweeping views out over the Indian Ocean.

This is one of our favourite routes to turn into a relaxed day out. We can drop you at the fort's entrance and collect you later, or choose the wait-and-return option so your driver stays with you for the day. On the way we can stop at the stilt fishermen, Unawatuna's horseshoe bay, or the Japanese Peace Pagoda — small detours that make the trip memorable.

Galle also works beautifully as the first leg of a longer south-coast tour. Pair it with Unawatuna and Weligama, or continue on to Hikkaduwa's reef. However you want to shape the day, we will handle the driving, the parking, and the timing so you can simply enjoy exploring.

Inside the ramparts, take time to wander without a plan — the fort is small enough to explore on foot and full of quiet corners, from the old Dutch Hospital, now lined with cafés, to the maritime museum and the sea-facing bastions where locals gather at sunset. Serious shoppers will find gem dealers, linen boutiques, and craft studios; food lovers can settle in for a long lunch of Sri Lankan rice and curry or fresh seafood.
